Is There a Densely Populated City in the Southeast? Furthermore, most people associate the New England Patriots with Boston, even though the Patriots themselves do not play in Boston. It is the home of the Boston Celtics, the Boston Red Sox, and the Boston Bruins. Boston is known for its professional sports teams. This is one of the biggest reasons why it is so expensive to live in Boston. Boston has a population density of approximately 14,360 people per square mile. But, that also means that Boston is one of the most densely populated cities in the United States. The population of Boston is only about 700,000 people, and the city itself is only 48 square miles. When people think about major cities in the Northeast, they usually think about Boston however, Boston doesn't have nearly as many residents as most people believe.
