Detroit Diesel gave the owner a new block.we did the rest of the work at the owners expense.Ĥ4 years in the business and worked on everything from 53 series to 149 series. put water in the block and immediately got bubbles. We had to strip the block and pressurize the oil passages with air and with the help of some plugs and tape. It ended up being a porus area in the block. Toward the end, it filally got some coolant in the oil. It never got coolant in the oil, but always oil in the coolant. In the time previous to coming in my shop, the company mechanic replaced everything at least one time with no positive results. Had the same problem two years ago on an engine with 800,000 miles and the problem existed for about 250,000 miles before getting worse. I agree with Hoove, 300,000 miles is,nt much - just over two years work, Check to make sure you have,nt got current drawing through you cooling system causing this ! Regards David He's going to try and keep it going until the Xmas break anyway. Thanks Hoove01, makes sense although I would have thought it would have got a lot worse by now after first starting a couple of years ago. It's almost never an oil cooler on a series 60.įlorida Detroit Diesel- Allison Shop Foreman Somebody didn't check the SCA's in their coolant. It's a pinhole in a liner from cavitation erosion. The engine has done approx 500,000km or 300,000 miles. There is no coolant/oil transmission cooler. I will get him to check the tell-tale hole is clear. The waterpump is a possibility but unlikely. I know leaking liner seals or injector tube seals could cause coolant in oil but not the reverse I dont think. I'm thinking the head could be cracked but am looking for the small things first. So far DDA have changed the oil cooler twice, the compressor twice and skimmed the cylinder head to ensure head gasket is sealing 100%. He says it has been slowly getting worse over the last two years and will take a few months before it gets so bad he has to change his coolant. Had a call from an owner/driver who has a 14L HK62 non-egr today who is continually getting oil contamination in his coolant. CATEGORY LISTINGS > DETROIT > Oil in coolant.
